Upon graduation from Academy, posted to U.S.S. Orleans as security officer. In 2357, promoted to lieutenant junior grade and transferred to command division. Led ship's search-and-rescue team, 2357-59. In 2359, transferred to U.S.S. Victory, commanded by Captain Zimbata, as junior ops officer. In 2360 the ship became trapped in a plasma streamer that fed into a black hole; Leijten devised a way to polarize the outer hull, weakening the hold of the streamer enough to free the ship. Promoted to lieutenant and named senior ops manager in 2361. In 2362, stardate 40164.7, led away mission to Federation outpost on Tarchannen III to investigate disappearance of 49 personnel. Served on four-year mission to fortify defensive capabilities along Federation-Romulan border, 2362-65. Promoted to lieutenant commander and named second officer of U.S.S. Victory, 2366. In 2367, served with distinction during Battle of Wolf 359. Vessel heavily damaged during battle, returned to spacedock for full refit. On stardate 44664, temporarily assigned to U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D to investigate recent disappearances of members of her Tarchannen III away team. Learned that she and her away team had been infected five years earlier on the planet by an alien DNA virus that compelled them to return and transform into alien beings native to that world. Leijten and Enterprise-D Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge began the transformation, but were successfully treated and fully cured by Enterprise medical personnel. Oversaw final refit of U.S.S. Victory as acting first officer. As first officer, served with distinction during second Borg incursion of Sector 001 in 2373.
